Boutique entrepreneurial regulatory and business law firm Spiritus Law has hired Steven W. Zelkowitz as managing partner.
Zelkowitz, who previously worked with the firm’s founding partners, Marbet Lewis and Robert F. Lewis, will expand Spiritus Law’s core services and bolster efforts to assist hospitality and retail clients struggling to recover from the pandemic, according to the firm.
Most recently a managing partner of law firm Fox Rothschild’s office in Miami, Zelkowitz brings more than 30 years of experience in management, business and transactional law in the commercial real estate and financial service industries.
His practice areas include public infrastructure, business relocation, property development and redevelopment, land use and zoning, sales transactions, financing of commercial and multifamily projects on behalf of lenders and borrowers, public/private partnerships and government relations for foreign and domestic clients.
“The natural synergy between Steven’s practice and our existing practices supports our firm’s strategic growth plan,” Robert Lewis, co-founding partner and chief operating officer of the firm, said in a corporate statement announcing the move. “Over the past 15 years as friends, colleagues and even competitors, we have been fortunate to build a relationship of trust with Steven. Our mutual respect and our commitment to collaboration will enable us to develop innovative solutions for our clients as they adjust to their new normal and rebuild their financial platforms.”
Zelkowitz holds a Juris Doctorate degree and master’s of city and regional planning from Rutgers University School of Law, and is admitted to practice law in Florida, New York and New Jersey. In addition to his professional and managerial endeavors, Zelkowitz previously served as vice mayor and councilman for his hometown of Miami Shores Village.
Also joining Spiritus Law is Jonathan Portuondo, who will work closely with Zelkowitz as an associate. Portuondo graduated with a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Miami School of Law and interned at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office before working as an associate at several small and mid-size law firms in South Florida.
